Schedule for Commons open for brush for 2012

Trash information: As the state has mandated a 50% reduction in solid waste from all New Jersey Municipalities, starting January 1, 2009, the Mayor and Council have decided to use a sticker program to encourage more recycling. Each sticker can be used for 34 gallons or 50 pounds of garbage. This year we are sending 110 stickers for the year 2009, in the future 104 stickers, equating to two bags a week, and will be sent every November for the following year. These are not dated stickers, so they can be used throughout the years.

Every bag of garbage must have a sticker on it. If you use garbage cans, place the sticker on the top item in the can so it is plainly visible when the lid is removed by the collector. For cleanup items, use one sticker for each 50 pounds of weight.
Landlords, please advise your tenants of the regulations and distribute the stickers to your tenants in a timely fashion. If you don't disperse the stickers, solid waste will not get picked up, and as owners, you will be fined.

DAY AND TIME OF COLLECTION: Your day of collection will remain the same, either Tuesday or Friday. However, the time of day may change. Your garbage should be placed at the curb by or before 7 AM on collection day with your sticker attached to each garbage bag.

LIMITS: ALL such waste should be in 34 gallon containers, either metal, plastic or 34 gallon heavy duty garbage bags. Electronic items will no longer be collected.  Save for the Borough's Electronic Recycling Day-April 28, 2012.  There is a 50 pound limit on each container. Bring trash receptacles back into your yard by the end of the collection day.

IMPORTANT: Items NOT in 34 gallons containers 1) may be left by Premier Disposal, 2) may blow away, 3) may be scattered by birds or animals, 4) are unsightly, and 5) may create a health hazard. Please cooperate.

BULKY WASTE: For cleanup items, use one sticker for each 50 pounds of weight.

WHITE GOODS AND CONSTRUCTION WASTE will not be picked up.  Save electronic items for our annual electronics recycling event. A $10.00 charge for freon items such as refridgerators, air conditioners, etc.

Garbage & Recycling Service: Premier Disposal

Brush & Leaves

Place brush at curb for collection by Monday of collection week. Please note that brush must not interfere with vehicular passage or storm water drainage. Brush must also be placed with stem portions facing out to the street. Once the collection has passed your house it will not return until the next collection week of the following month. Brush will NOT be picked up if it is larger than 3" in diameter and NO stumps will be picked up. If you have any questions, call Borough Hall (638-6455) between 9 AM and 4 PM weekdays.

Recycling Information

Curbside recycling is a service our town provides for its residents. Please take advantage of this service. Recycling does make a difference in our environment. Our goal is to keep all recyclables out of the trash flow.

To make recycling as convenient as possible, Premier Disposal collects curbside every other week. We also list the recycling dates in the town newsletter. Take a few minutes to copy the dates on your monthly calendar as a reminder.

Newspaper, magazines, junk mail, cardboard and commingled items are collected.

Commingled items include glass of all colors, aluminum, tin, paper and plastic...

Plastics # 1 -7 any size and any shape are curbside recyclable.

Reminder: you must tie newspapers, magazines, corrugated cardboard, single-ply cardboard (such as cereal boxes and gift boxes), and junk mail (not shredded) in separate bundles for pick up.

Please cross tie newspaper, magazines, junk mail and cardboard into bundles 8 -12 inches high. The bundles should be placed next to your recycling container for collection.

Place recycling out the night before your pick-up day. Collection begins early in the morning. If your recycling is not out when the truck goes by, please bring it back into your yard. It will not be picked up until the next scheduled pick-up collection day. Bring recycling receptacles back into your yard by the end of the collection day. Sometimes our collector has a problem and cannot finish all the streets on the collection day. If they haven’t been to your street at all, leave your materials curbside and they should be by the very next day to pick them up.

STYROFOAM RECYCLING

Don't waste your garbage stickers on throwing away unwanted Styrofoam, because you can easily recycle the noodles/peanut pieces at the UPS Store in the Greyrock's Shopping Center. Bring the noodle/peanut pieces to the store; simply leave it at the front desk or in the corner. UPS itself reuses most of the Styrofoam to mail out its packages. UPS is located at 1802 Route 31 North (next to the Bagelsmith and the dry cleaners). The hours are Monday to Friday 8:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. and Saturday 9 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Sundays the store is closed. For info: 638-3500; website: store4525@theupsstore.com.

Please notify borough hall of any recycling concerns with our recycling contractor638-6455.

EXPANDED POLYSTYRENE (EPS) STYROFOAM - According to the Alliance of Foam Packaging Recyclers, (epspacking.org/info/html), it's difficult to find anyone who will come and collect EPS.  In addition, EPS that was used for food or drink, such as a Styrofoam coffee cup or meal tray, usually cannot be recycled because the debris will ruin the recycling equipment.  Any tape of other items attached to the EPS/Styrofoam needs to be removed as well.  Foam Peck Industries accepts EPS/Styrofoam, unless it is contaminated by food or drink.  The EPS is used to stuff children's toys.  Foam Peck has a drop off location in Springfield, NJ. Contact Mitch or Dave at 973-376-3700 for directions and more information.  Please remove any tape attached to the EPS.  (Think of combining this recycling effort with your friends, neighbors, or relatives.)

PLASTIC BAGS- Take them to Clinton A&P or Clinton ShopRite for recycling. You can also purchase cloth shopping bags from local stores such as Clinton Walmart, ShopRite or A&P.  These bags can be used over and over again, reducing your need for plastic.

Thank you for making an effort to recycle.

Environmentally,

Lynn Hughes
High Bridge Environmental Commission
Recycling Coordinator

Christmas trees will be picked up on a daily basis beginning December 26 through February 10, 2012.  Remember to remove all ornaments, lights, and tree stands; decorated trees will not be collected.

Hard Plastic Recycling Day

Thanks to all who participated in our first annual "Hard Plastic" recycling event!

The High Bridge Environmental Committee is attempting to setup another event for our Borough. However, the recycling economy is not strong at the moment and a plastic recycling company has not been identified yet.

Recycling all items that can be recycled will reduce the amount of trash you need to put out on garbage collection day.

What to do with left over paint...

According to the National Paint & Coatings Association, paint can last for years when you follow these proper storage tips:

> Cover the opening with plastic wrap.

> Make sure the lid fits securely so the paint doesn't leak.

> Store the paint can upside down; that creates a tight seal around the lid, keeping the paint fresh until you need it again.

but if you want to give the boot to those old cans, here's what you can do:

Check the label. Paint made before 1978 might contain lead, and paint made before 1991 might contain mercury. Both materials should be listed on the paint label.

Recycle it. Hunterdon County offers recycling programs for old paint and empty paint cans. Water-based, or latex, paint can be recycled into new paint or it can even be used to create nonpaint products such as cement. Oil-based, or alkyd, paint is usually used for fuel blending- meaning it's burned to create energy at a power plant.

Donate it for reuse. Some organizations will accept paint that's in good condition, meaning it can be easily stirred to a smooth consistency and is uncontaminated. The paint should also be in an intact, labeled container. Check for donation options in your area by clicking on "Paint donation" at Earth911.

Dispose of it. If you can't donate or recycle your paint, here is how you can dispose of latex paint:  dry out the paint to place in regular trash. (oil based paint is always considered hazardous and should be disposed of at a household-hazardous waste collection facility.)

To dry out paint-

1. Check the label to see if any lead or hazardous materials are in it. If there are, then you must wait for the county hazardous waste collection day.

2. Remove the lid and let the paint air dry in the can. To speed up the process, stir in an absorbent material such as clay kitty litter, sawdust, or leftover concrete mix.

3. Look to see when the paint is completely dry and shows no moisture whatsoever, wrap the dried clump in newspaper and place into your regular trash. Do not place the lid back on the can. Wrap the lid and can separately in newspaper for disposal.

*If you need to get rid of a lot of latex paint, you may want to consider purchasing "waste paint hardener."  A cup or so of this powder mixed in with a gallon of paint will cause it to harden up within hours.
